Consortium Seminars for Teachers

  • English and Language Arts

    • Education 600S: Reading Assessment and Instruction. Reading assessment, understanding reading problems, and intervention strategies to address reading problems in the classroom setting. Appropriate for teachers in grades K-3. 3 semester hours. This course will meet Tuesdays, 4:40-7:30, at a location convenient to the enrolled students.

    • Education 600T: Syntax. English sentence structure, with emphasis on pertinent SOLs. Appropriate for teachers in all grade levels. 1 semester hour.

    • Education 600U: Punctuation. Convention and usage of punctuation in English, with emphasis on pertinent SOLs. Appropriate for teachers in all grade levels. 1 semester hour.

    • Education 600V: Dialects and Phonology. Oral language, with emphasis on pertinent SOLs. Appropriate for teachers in all grade levels. 1 semester hour.

  • Mathematics

    • Education 600A: Elementary/Middle School Mathematics. Mathematics content, methods, and curriculum in Elementary and Middle School. 3 semester hours. This course will meet Tuesdays, 4:40-7:30, at a location convenient to the enrolled students.

    • Education 600B: Contemporary School Mathematics. NCTM Principles and Standards, Va SOLs, SOL Testing. 1 semester hour.

    • Education 600C: Number Systems of School Mathematics. Concepts, principles, and structure of the counting numbers, whole numbers, and integers. Includes teaching strategies and algorithm development, especially appropriate for PK-5 teachers. 1 semester hour.

    • Education 600D: Numeration Systems of School Mathematics. Concepts and principles of numeration, with emphasis on the critical importance of the place value numerations system of arithmetic and its relationship to teaching the algorithms of arithmetic, especially appropriate for PK-8 teachers. 1 semester hour.

    • Education 600E: The Rational Number System I. The concepts, principles and algorithms of the rational numbers written as fractions, especially appropriate for grade 4-9 teachers. 1 semester hour.

    • Education 600F: The Rational Number System II. The concepts, principles and algorithms of the rational numbers written in decimal form. Knowledge of the content of Education 600D and 600E is essential for success in this course, which is especially important for grade 4-9 teachers. 1 semester hour.

    • Education 600G: Applications of the Rational Numbers. Concepts of ratio, proportion and percent and the application of these concepts to "real world" situations. Knowledge of content of Educ 600E and 600F is essential for success in this course, which is especially important for grade 4-9 teachers. 1 semester hour.

    • Education 600H: Elementary/Middle School Geometry. Content and processes of elementary and middle school geometry, including classification and relationship of shapes (similarity, congruence, and transformations), appropriate for PK-9 teachers. 1 semester hour.

    • Education 600I: Measurement in Mathematics. The measuring processes and applications, with emphasis on direct and indirect measurement, accuracy, precision and computation with numbers arising from measurement. Appropriate for teachers in all grade levels. 1 semester hour.

    • Education 600J: Elementary/Middle School Probability and Statistics. Fundamentals, concepts and applications of probability and of descriptive and inferential statistics with emphasis on making sense of data and use of data in decision-making. Appropriate for teachers in grades PK-9. 1 semester hour.

    • Education 600K: Elementary/Middle School Algebra I. Connections among geometry, arithmetic and algebra; some experience with algeblocks. Appropriate for teachers in grades 4-8. 1 semester hour.

    • Education 600L: Elementary/Middle School Algebra II. Connections among data, equations, and graphing, including graphing technology. Appropriate for teachers in grades 4-8. 1 semester hour.

    • Education 600M: Mathematical Thought. Principles of basic logic; reading, writing, and interpreting mathematical statements; inductive and elementary deductive reasoning in appropriate contexts. Appropriate for teachers in grades 4-9. 1 semester hour.

    • Education 600N: Teaching Mathematics Problem-Solving. Techniques and strategies for writing, reading, and solving routine and non-routine mathematics problems. Special emphasis on teaching students to solve "word problems." Appropriate for teachers in grades 3-9. 1 semester hour.

  • Social Studies

    • Education 600O: Teaching United States History. Content and Methods in teaching United States History. Appropriate for teachers in all grade levels. 3 semester hours. This course will meet Wednesdays, 4:40-7:30, at a location convenient to the enrolled students.

    • Education 600P: Geography. Special attention to the adaptation of geography into the 8th grade curriculum. Appropriate for teachers in all grade levels. 1 semester hour..

    • Education 600Q: United States History. Special attention to the SOL bridge. Appropriate for teachers in all grade levels. 1 semester hour.

    • Education 600R: World History. Special attention to the SOL bridge and to non-western aspects of world history. Appropriate for teachers in all grade levels. 1 semester hour.

Times and locations will be suited to the group of enrolled students.Three-credit courses meet for a whole semester. One-credit classes normally meet for a total of 12 clock hours. Typical meeting times are from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. one day each week, which makes the class convenient to the school day for most public school teachers.
