M.A.Ed. cohorts for teachers in K-12

Two new graduate cohorts began in September 2006, each leading to the Master of Arts in Education. One will culminate in an M.A.Ed. in Teaching American History, and the other will culminate in an M.A.Ed. in Reading. Both programs are designed to accommodate working teachers, with classes meeting once a week in the early evening, beginning around 4:30 p.m. and continuing to 7:30 p.m. Both have classes during fall, spring, and summer terms.

With permission from the director of a graduate program, a new student may join a cohort in progress or enroll for a single course. Each semester's courses are announced through the Registrar's Office.

The American History program usually takes about three calendar years to complete. Licensed teachers who complete the history program will be by federal definition "well qualified" in the field of history.

The Reading program usually takes about two calendar years to complete. Licensed teachers who complete the reading program are eligible to be certified as Reading Specialists in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Some school districts are assisting their teachers with tuition costs. Be sure to check with your district to see what support they will offer.
