Getting your teaching license and applying for a teaching position

  • You must pass Praxis II and provide a passing score report. This is a requirement for completion of your program. If you graduate prior to meeting this requirement, you must stay in touch with the Neff Center and let us know when you pass Praxis II so that the teacher education program completion informaiton can be put on your EHC transcript.

  • When you have completed all requirements, the Neff Center requests your transcript with your degree posted from the Registrar's Office, places your Application and Verification form with the transcript and your Praxis scores, and sends your application to the state. The state must then review the application and issue your license. This process is expected to take at least three or four weeks.

  • The license will be mailed to you at the address you have given on the application.

  • It will be useful in your job search for you to have a placement file in the Powell Resource Center. If you set up a placement file, the Powell Center will create a folder for you with documents that you specify (Praxis scores, letters of recommendation, copies of awards, etc.) and they will send this packet at your request to prospective employers.

  • You may apply for teaching positions or substitute work while you are student teaching, but you must complete student teaching before you take other work. If you send applications, always note in your application that you expect to complete the teacher education program on a stated date so that the search committee will know when you will be available to start. You may use a statement like "I am currently student teaching, and I will complete the program in teacher education at Emory & Henry College on ______________(date)." You may give the telephone number of the Neff Center office, and we will confirm your status for anyone who calls.

  • You may apply for teaching positions or substitute work after you complete student teaching and before you receive your license. If you do so, always note in your application that your license is expected. You may use a statement like "I have completed the program in teacher education at Emory & Henry College, and application for my teaching license in Virginia is in process." You may also give the telephone number of the Neff Center office, and we will confirm your status for anyone who calls.
