Exit Interviews

Exit interviews for students completing the Professional Semester

Exit interviews begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Neff Education Center in McGlothlin-Street Hall. The date (usually during the week of semester exams) will be announced in the Monday seminar meetings near the end of each semester.

You must be present when interviews begin and stay until you have completed all parts of the interview. Ordinary student dress is fine. Interviews are usually finished by noon.

Tips on applying for teaching positions or substitute work while you are student teaching or waiting for your licensure

Schedule for Exit Interview day:

  • As you arrive at the Neff Education Center, Mrs. Williams will be available in the CRC (MS 332) to assign you to a faculty member for the exit interview. These interviews will take about 10 or 15 minutes and will take place after your group meeting has ended.

  • After you have signed up for your exit interview, Mrs. Williams will meet with you to:

    • turn in your student teaching/observation hours if you have not yet given them to your professor

    • turn in copies of your VCLA and VRA score reports. It is important for you to turn these in, because they must go to the state with your Application for Virginia License. Applicants who do not include a VCLA score report (and VRA if they are applying for an elementary license) will receive provisional licenses.

    • pick up your EDUC 115 materials if you want to keep them. If you do not pick them up, they will be shredded.

    • read, complete, and return the Exit Review Memorandum. You may print and complete this memo and bring it with you to the Exit Interview if you wish. The purpose of this document is to make sure that we have good contact information for you and know your status with regard to completion of required assessments (Praxis II, VCLA, and VRA). It contains a statement you must sign that says you understand the content of the memorandum, so read it carefully and bring along with you any questions you may have about any information on this form.

    • complete your Application for a Virginia License. If you want to download this application from the VDOE website and complete it before the interview, be sure to:

      • use black ink

      • read all of the instructions on the form and complete parts 1, 2, and 3; complete part 6 if you have already accepted a teaching position. Date and sign the form. Parts 4 and 5 do not apply to most of our students, so check with Mrs. Williams before you add anything in these sections.

      • bring the completed form with you for us to send with your recommendation.

  • Dr. Thompson will speak with you and give you an opportunity to complete the program evaluation. Your comments on this evaluation are useful to us in making decisions about program development and improvement.

  • When your evaluation is complete, you can turn it in and go to meet individually for your exit interview in the professor's office.

  • If Portfolio presentations remain to be done, these will take place immediately after the exit interviews are over.

What to do after the Exit Interview and until you receive your Virginia Licensure:

  • We will notify you by e-mail and telephone using the contacts you provide at the exit interview if your folder is incomplete in any way. Let us know if your e-mail address or telephone number changes before you receive your Virginia teaching license.
  • You are invited to stay in touch with the Neff Education Center and to call us if you have questions or concerns about your program.
  • If you have not already passed Praxis II, it is your responsibility to notify us when you pass. You will not have completed the Teacher Education program until you have passed Praxis II, and your Application for Licensure will be held here in the Neff Center until we receive your Praxis II scores. We will then forward your Application to the state along with your College Verification form.
