The Undergraduate Teacher Education Program at Emory & Henry College
Required assessments
Register for Praxis I during your enrollment in EDUC 114, Introduction to Education. Your fee for one registration for Praxis I is covered by the fee for the course. You must pass Praxis I in order to student teach, and tutoring is provided for you as part of EDUC 114. If you do not pass Praxis I on the first attempt, you may remain in the 114 tutoring sessions until you pass Praxis I even though you have already completed the course. We encourage students to participate in Praxis tutoring until passing scores are received on Praxis I.
Exemption from Praxis I: Students may be exempt from Praxis I on the basis of SAT or ACT scores. If you qualify for the exemption, be sure to notify the Education Office during your enrollment in EDUC 114 and request reimbursement of your Praxis I fee.Take the Virginia Communications and Literacy Assessment (VCLA) in the junior year, in the semester immediately prior to taking the Praxis II. The cost of VCLA is not covered in fees for student teaching. The testing agency for VCLA releases only one score report, which is sent to the person who takes the assessment. It is the student's responsibility to file a photocopy of the score report with the Education Center office and to retain the original score report in case it is needed in the future for verification.
Take Praxis II during your last semester of course work, before student teaching. This will give you time to re-test during student teaching if you have a problem. You may file for reimbursement of the test fee during the student teaching semester by presenting your score report or proof of registration. Submit reimbursement requests by May 31 in the same academic year in which you student teach.
All students seeking certification to teach in elementary grades must take and pass the Virginia Reading Assessment (VRA). It should be taken at or near the time of completion of EDUC 410. Like the VCLA, the cost of VRA is not covered in fees for student teaching. The testing agency releases only one score report, which is sent to the person who takes the assessment. It is the student's responsibility to file a photocopy of the score report with the Education Center office and to retain the original score report in case it is needed in the future for verification.
Interdisciplinary English and secondary English majors must pass the Writing Proficiency Exam or ENGL 199.
