Required assessments in the Emory & Henry College Teacher Education Program

Click here for registration information and links to Internet registration sites.

Assessments in EHC teacher education programs are linked to courses, and students are required to take and pass all assessments in their area. Assessments may be taken during or prior to the associated courses. Scores are accepted upon presentation of official score reports. These are the required assessments, the courses to which they are linked, and additional useful information about each assessment:

  • Praxis I is required of all students entering our Virginia-approved licensure programs. Students register for Praxis I during EDUC 114, Introduction to Education.

    • Exemption from Praxis I
      • SAT score exemption requires a minimum verbal plus math score of 1100 with at least 530 in verbal and 530 in math.
      • ACT score exemption requires a minimum composite score of 24 with no less than 22 for math, and the English score plus the reading score must equal no less than 46.

    • Tutoring for Praxis I is part of EDUC 114. Students who do not pass Praxis I on the first attempt are encouraged to remain in the tutoring sessions until they pass Praxis I even though they may have already completed the course with a passing grade.

    • Students who have difficulty with Praxis I on the first attempt should check with the Neff Education Center Office before taking the assessment again.

    • Passing scores on Praxis I are required before a student can register for the student teaching semester.

    • The fee for one registration for the paper-based Praxis I is covered by the course fee for EDUC 114. The paper based test may be registered through the Neff Education Center, but students who choose to take the computer-based Praxis I must register themselves on line or by phone.

    • Students who have paid for the Praxis I by registering themselves or who have exempted Praxis I by SAT or ACT scores may claim a reimbursement of the fee paid for Praxis I. Requests for reimbursement must be accompanied by a score report or proof of registration, and must be submitted on or before the last day of exams in the semester of their enrollment in EDUC 114. Cost of the computer-based Praxis I is a little higher than the cost of the paper-based test, but the reimbursement amount will be only the cost of the paper-based test.

  • Virginia Communications and Literacy Assessment: All students must take the VCLA, and students should take this course during or prior to EDUC 305/505 Human Growth and Development. The cost is not covered in fees. The testing agency sends only one score report, which is sent to the person who takes the test. Students must file a photocopy of the score report with the Neff Education Center Office and should keep their original score report because they may need it again for verification when seeking a teaching position.

  • Praxis II: Each student must take a Praxis II specific to his or her teaching subject during the last semester of course work or during student teaching. One registration for Praxis II is covered in the course fee for student teaching. Students may register through the Neff Education Center Office during the first two weeks of the professional (student teaching) semester. Students who register themselves and pay for the test prior to student teaching may file for reimbursement during their student teaching semester. Requests for rimbursement must be accompanied by a score report or proof of registration submitted on or before the last day of exams in the student teaching semester.

  • Virginia Reading Assessment: Students seeking certification to teach in elementary grades must take and pass the VRA. It should be taken at or near the time of completion of EDUC 410. The cost of the VRA is not covered in fees. The testing agency sends only one score report, which is sent to the person who takes the test. Students must file a photocopy of the score report with the Neff Education Center Office and should keep their original score report because they may need it again for verification when seeking a teaching position.

  • Writing Proficiency Exam: Interdisciplinary English and secondary English majors must pass the Writing Proficiency Exam or ENGL 199.

  • All students in teacher education programs must meet all Emory & Henry College graduation requirements
